Pathogenicity of Virulent Species of Group C Streptococci in Human

Group C streptococci (GCS) are livestock pathogens and they often cause zoonotic diseases in humans. They are Gram-positive, in mostly β-hemolytic and facultative anaerobes. Because of their close evolutionary kinship with group A streptococci (GAS), GCS share many common virulence factors with GAS and cause a similar range of diseases. Due to the exchange of genetic material with GAS, GCS belo...

Different erythromycin resistance mechanisms in group C and group G streptococci.

Different mechanisms of erythromycin resistance predominate in group C and G streptococcus (GCS and GGS, respectively) isolates collected from 1992 to 1995 in Finland. Of the 21 erythromycin-resistant GCS and 32 erythromycin-resistant GGS isolates, 95% had the mefA or mefE drug efflux gene and 94% had the ermTR methylase gene, respectively.

Lectins detecting group C streptococci.

Lectin of Wisteria floribunda specifically agglutinates group C streptococci. The reaction is strongly inhibited by N-acetyl-d-galactosamine, slightly by lactose, and not at all by galactose. The utility of the simple test of the lectin with group C streptococci is discussed.

Bacteremia Caused by Group G Streptococci, Taiwan

A retrospective observational study in Taiwan, 1998-2004, identified 92 patients with group G streptococcal bacteremia; 86 had Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis. The most common diagnosis was cellulitis (48 cases), followed by primary bacteremia (34 cases). Infection recurred in 9 patients. Mortality rate was low (3.3%); resistance to quinupristin-dalfopristin was high.

Studies on the Pathogenicity of Group a Streptococci

A QUANTITATIVE STUDY OF THE COMBINED ANTIPHAGOCYTIC EFFECTS OF THE M PROTEIN AND THE HYALURONIC ACID CAPSULES OF FOUR STRAINS OF GROUP A STREPTOCOCCI REVEALED THE FOLLOWING FACTS RELATING TO THEIR INTRAPERITONEAL VIRULENCE IN MICE AND RATS: 1. The most virulent strain, S23M (matt), produced both a large hyaluronic acid capsule and a full complement of M protein, the combined effects of which re...
